Born in Rockland, Maine, Burpee painted mostly in Maine and in the Greater Boston area.  He is one of seven painters featured in the 1994 book, "The Lynn Beach Painters: Art Along the North Shore 1880 -1920" by D. Roger Howlett.  His work is in the permanent collections of the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art and many other museums.
