Fairfield Porter

One of Maine's best known painters, Fairfield Porter summered on Great Spruce Head Island for over 60 years. The Barred Islands were directly across from his summer home, and he painted them on several occasions both in works focusing on them exclusively (as below) and as part of larger images including the dock on his property at Great Spruce Head. One of these latter works, The Dock, oil on canvas, 20.06 x 36 in., 1974-5, is included in the permananet collection of the Farnsworth Art Museum.
